Until recently, military laser systems intended for installation on the aircraft, is something from the category of scientific fantastiki.Razrabotki laser weapons are underway in many countries, but in most cases it is a ground-based lasers. Laser systems for aircraft literally be counted on one hand.
The U.S. Defense Department can begin ground testing laser weapons, which plans to install on the fighters and even unmanned aerial vehicles in 2014.
According to DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency), lasers that will be used on fighter-interceptor, represent a new class of weapons, which is 10 times smaller and lighter than the current class of military lasers and will be developed and manufactured by Aeronautical Systems Incorporated.
Interestingly, the installation of laser weapons is actually a high-energy part of the project under the name of the DARPA High Energy Liquid Laser Area Defense System, which is primarily focused on the destruction of the surface-to-air missiles class, Downing and other types of weapons that threaten aircraft.
However, lasers may also potentially be used as an offensive weapon against certain ground targets.
However, it should be noted that this laser weapon is controversial proposal, and most military analysts, politicians and engineers do not take as long as airborne lasers as weapons for real combat use in the form as we see in Hollywood movies.
